Westbrook’s Commitment to ALL Children in Our Schools

Westbrook Public Schools is committed to the success of every child by supporting the individual and unique needs of all children in a positive, inclusive, empathetic, and caring school community.  Westbrook Public Schools believes and values that all children are unique individuals with different needs, interests, talents, and passions and that our schools and school community are deeply committed to embracing and supporting those differences.

Westbrook Public Schools believes that to ensure the success of all students and the educational priorities identified in our Westbrook Portrait of a Graduate, we need to ensure equitable access and delivery of educational services. Equitable access in Westbrook Public Schools means providing resources, experiences, opportunities, and supports to meet the varied and individual needs of each student.

Westbrook Portrait of a Graduate

The school community and the community of Westbrook collaborated to share their perspectives and values about educational priorities for all students in Westbrook Public Schools.  The Board approved the Westbrook Portrait of a Graduate in 2022.  We are proud of the inclusive nature of our community discourse and confident that our shared vision of the Westbrook Portrait of Graduate represents well the educational values and beliefs of the Westbrook community for the youth of Westbrook.  The Westbrook Portrait of a Graduate includes six priority attributes that describe the Westbrook High School graduate: critical problem-solver, creative thinker, effective communicator, perseverant, socially aware, and responsible decision maker.

During the 2023-2024 school year, our school leaders, educators, and students have been hard at work learning what each Westbrook Portrait of a Graduate attribute means in their day to day experiences in our schools in the classroom and in a wide range of activities.  To learn more about the progress of our work at each school and district-wide, please visit one of the following links.

News and Announcements

  • Weekly Update for WHS - 5/8/2026

    Greetings, Westbrook High School Community,

Please see the following updates for WHS.

    AP Testing

AP exam administration started on Monday. The final AP Exams will be administered between May 11 and May 15. If your student has any questions about testing logistics or what to expect before, during and after testing, they should contact WHS school counselor Rachel Kurek.

AI In Our Schools - Community Forum

Join us on Monday, May 18 at 6:00 PM in the Westbrook High School Auditorium for an evening event hosted by Westbrook Public Schools and the Board of Education. National AI in Education expert and ChatEDU podcast host Matt Mervis will help families understand the current state of AI and its impact on how we live, learn, and work. All are welcome.

    Dress Code Reminder

As the weather gets warmer, this is a friendly reminder about our district dress code expectations. The Westbrook Board of Education believes that appropriate school attire reflects respect for education and helps maintain a positive learning environment for all students.

As a father of four myself, I fully understand that this can become a daily “discussion” at home this time of year. Somehow, in my house at least, as temperatures rise, fabric seems to shrink. We appreciate your partnership in helping students make clothing choices that are appropriate for school and aligned with the stated Board of Education expectations: “The Board expects all members of the school community to dress modestly and respectfully when on school grounds, participating in school-sponsored activities, and when representing the school district.”

Thank you for your support as we head toward the final stretch of the school year and transition into summer.

    Upcoming School Climate Surveys

Next week, families will receive links to our district’s school climate surveys. Your feedback is one of the most important ways we gather perspectives on what is going well in our schools and where we can continue to improve to strengthen our overall school climate.

This month, students in grades 3–12, staff, and families will participate in the Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (CSCI), developed by the National School Climate Center (NSCC). The survey measures perceptions of school climate, safety, relationships, environment, and communication across 14 dimensions and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. Responses are anonymous and will help guide future school improvement efforts. Thank you in advance for your partnership and support.

As we wrap up the week, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to our WHS PTSO for the exceptional Teacher Appreciation Week they organized for our staff. Dress Code Reminder

As the weather gets warmer, this is a friendly reminder about our district dress code expectations. The Westbrook Board of Education believes that appropriate school attire reflects respect for education and helps maintain a positive learning environment for all students.

As a father of four kids between the ages of 12 and 18, I fully understand that this can become a daily “discussion” at home this time of year. Somehow, in my house at least, as temperatures rise, fabric seems to shrink! Regardless, the school appreciates your partnership in helping students make clothing choices that are appropriate for school and aligned with the stated Board of Education expectations: “The Board expects all members of the school community to dress modestly and respectfully when on school grounds, participating in school-sponsored activities, and when representing the school district.”

Thank you for your support as we head toward the final stretch of the school year and transition into summer.

    Fine Arts at WMS

Westbrook Middle School proudly showcased the strength of its fine arts programs over the past two weeks through the band and choir concerts, the Unified Art Show, and Wednesday’s WMS Art Show. Each event highlighted our students’ tremendous growth, creativity, dedication, and developing artistic talent.

Our middle school art gallery is truly exceptional and reflects the skill, knowledge, and remarkable artistic output of our students. These accomplishments demonstrate our commitment to a well-rounded education that values both rigorous academics and high-quality fine arts instruction. Through these experiences, students develop creativity, communication, perseverance, and other essential skills aligned with our Portrait of a Graduate.

    SBA & NGSS Assessments

Starting a week from Monday, all students will participate in mandatory state testing in reading, writing, and mathematics. Eighth graders will also take the science assessment. These assessments provide valuable insights into student strengths and areas needing improvement, helping both families and teachers support your child's academic growth. Here is how you can help.

To ensure your child performs their best:

    • Ensure they get adequate sleep starting on Sunday night
    • Provide a balanced breakfast to help them maintain focus
    • Send them with a healthy snack and water
    • Make sure they arrive at school on time each day
    • Avoid scheduling early dismissals during testing week

    Technology requirements:

    • Students must bring fully charged Chromebooks daily
    • They need wired headphones (the school has extra sets if needed)
    • Optional: they may bring a wired mouse if preferred over trackpad
    • Students should bring a book for quiet reading if they finish early

Per testing regulations, all smartphones, smartwatches, and other unauthorized electronic devices must be left at home or secured in lockers during testing. While these tests don't affect grades, they provide essential data and offer valuable test-taking practice for your child's future. Here is the schedule:

Monday, May 18 - (SBA) ELA or Math CAT

Tuesday, May 19 - (SBA) ELA or Math CAT

Wednesday, May 20 - (NGSS) Grade 8 only; (SBA) Math PT for Grade 7 only; Field Trip - Grade 6

    Thursday, May 21 - (SBA) Math PT for Grades 6 & 8; Alternate Lesson - Grade 7

    Teacher Appreciation Week

Our faculty and staff would like to express their profound gratitude to the PTO for an extraordinary Teacher Appreciation Week. The creative 90’s themed spoiling they gave the staff daily was a resounding success! Each thoughtfully planned day was special. From “This is how we BREW it” to “Baby Got SNACK,” wonderful moments of joy and rejuvenation were provided throughout the week. These gestures of appreciation meant the world to our dedicated educators.

The time, effort, and creativity invested in planning and executing this celebration did not go unnoticed. Our teachers felt truly valued and recognized for their commitment to Westbrook's students. Many of you contributed to this special week for our teachers. Please know that your continuous support empowers our teachers to give their best every day. The Westbrook community is fortunate to have such a caring and generous PTO.

  • Weekly Update for WMS 5/1/2026

    May 1, 2026

    Greetings, Westbrook Middle School Community,

Please see the following updates for WMS.

    SBA & NGSS Assessments

This spring, students in grades 3-8 will participate in Connecticut's standardized assessment program. During the week of May 18, your child will take the following assessments based on their grade level. It gets a little “alphabet soup”y, so I’ll do my best to explain:

    • Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in English language arts/literacy (students take 1 assessment)  and mathematics (students take 2 assessments)
    • Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Assessment (Grade 8 only will take 1 assessment)
    • CAT - Computer Adaptive Test - Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) uses Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) to adjust question difficulty in real-time based on student responses, providing a personalized assessment for grades 3–8 in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics. Correct answers lead to harder, higher-value questions, while incorrect answers lead to easier ones, enabling precise, efficient measurement of student proficiency aligned with Common Core State Standards.
    • PT - Performance Task - The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium performance task (PT) is a crucial component of the end-of-year exams, focusing on real-world application of knowledge in mathematics. This computer-based task requires students to analyze a complex, multi-step scenario, demonstrating higher-order thinking and critical thinking skills beyond standard multiple-choice questions.

These online assessments measure your child's knowledge and skills against grade-level standards using a variety of interactive question formats. The results help us identify learning gaps, inform curriculum decisions, and provide valuable insights into student progress.

At Westbrook Public Schools, we recognize that while standardized tests have limitations, they provide important information about our student groups as we prepare for the upcoming school year. We appreciate your support as we build a more comprehensive understanding of our learners. Additionally, please note that these assessments represent just one of many tools we use to evaluate student knowledge, skills and progress. We consider multiple data points when creating each learner's profile. For more information about Connecticut's assessment system, please visit this website

Now that you know your ABC’s, here’s what the actual testing week will look like for the kids:

Monday, May 18 - (SBA) ELA or Math CAT

Tuesday, May 19 - (SBA) ELA or Math CAT

Wednesday, May 20 - (NGSS) Grade 8 only; (SBA) Math PT for Grade 7 only; Field Trip - Grade 6

    Thursday, May 21 - (SBA) Math PT for Grades 6 & 8; Alternate Lesson - Grade 7

What can you do to help your child prepare for test week? Two things:

    1. Get them to bed early Sunday through Wednesday
    2. Make sure they have a nutritious breakfast before they leave the house

Our teachers have done the rest.

    Spring Music Concerts

Congratulations to our choirs! They had their concert this week, and they did a phenomenal job. In most school subjects, we get to see their growth through common and project-based assessments, but it is something special to hear their growth. Well done, choirs. You sounded beautiful.

    Spring Band Concert

    Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 6:00 p.m.

    Westbrook High School Auditorium

Students should report to the middle school band room to unpack their instruments before reporting to the high school auditorium.

7th/8th graders should report at 4:45 PM

6th graders should report at 5:15 PM

Concert Dress:  Black on the bottom with Black Music/Band T-Shirts on top

Students have been working hard on their music for the concerts and look forward to sharing their learning with you.

    Art Show

Join us for WMS's Art Show on May 6, coinciding with the band concerts. Doors open at 4:30 PM, allowing visitors to enjoy student artwork displayed throughout the middle school hallways before the musical performances. Band students can briefly guide their parents through the exhibition before warm-up time. Refreshments will be provided. We especially encourage choir students and their families to attend both events. Make it a complete evening of artistic celebration. Come for the visual arts and stay for the musical performances!

  • Weekly Update for WHS 5/1/2026

    Greetings, Westbrook High School Community,

Please see the following updates for WHS.

    Choices Matter

Yesterday, Westbrook High School hosted a powerful 90-minute Choices Matter assembly featuring Paralympian Steve Emt, who shared a deeply personal story about how one bad choice changed the course of his life and the lives of others. This Connecticut Highway Safety Office program focuses on impaired driving, peer pressure, and personal responsibility; with prom just around the corner, the timing could not have been more meaningful. I want to extend a huge thank you to Amy Gallagher for planning and coordinating this impactful event for our students.

    Blood Drive

For the third year in a row, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) has held blood drives at Westbrook High School. The Red Cross was present today, and we held another successful drive. Students and staff made life saving decisions to donate one of our most precious resources. Thank you to Mrs. Bancroft, the Red Cross and FCCLA club for putting this on.

    Testing

AP exam administration starts on Monday. The 2026 AP Exams will be administered from May 4–8 and May 11–15. If your student has any questions about testing logistics or what to expect before, during and after testing, they should contact WHS school counselor Rachel Kurek.

    National Decision Day

From WHS school counselor Rachel Kurek: Today, we proudly celebrated National Decision Day with our senior class. Members of Westbrook High School's Class of 2026 shared their post-secondary plans, whether heading to college, entering a trade, joining the military, or beginning their careers. To mark the occasion, the entire senior class came together for a group photo, proudly wearing gear or holding signs that represent their next steps. We are incredibly proud of the Class of 2026 and excited to see all they will accomplish beyond high school!

    Advisory

During advisory today, students participated in a special career readiness session led by local business and industry partners. Guests shared information about their careers and workplaces, then guided students through real-world scenarios focused on important “durable skills” such as communication, professionalism, initiative, and decision-making.

Students discussed each scenario, considering positive and negative outcomes and how they might respond in similar situations. This interactive experience helped students better understand workplace expectations and build skills that are essential for future success.

Carefully designed by College/Career Coordinator Leslie Carson, this opportunity aligned with our Portrait of a Graduate goals and supported students in developing the habits and mindsets needed for college, careers, and beyond. Thank you to Leslie for planning this and to our community members for making this so very meaningful and “real.”

  • Weekly Update for WMS - 4/24/2026

    Greetings, Westbrook Middle School Community,

Please see the following updates for WMS.

    SBA & NGSS Assessments

This spring, students in grades 3-8 will participate in Connecticut's standardized assessment program. During the week of May 18, your child will take the following assessments based on their grade level:

    • Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in English language arts/literacy (1 assessment)  and mathematics (2 assessments)
    • Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Assessment (Grade 8 only will take 1 assessment)

Additionally, please note that these assessments represent just one of many tools we use to evaluate student knowledge, skills and progress—we consider multiple data points when creating each learner's profile.

For more information about Connecticut's assessment system, please visit this website. If you have any questions about the testing process, please contact me directly. Thank you for your partnership in your child's education as we gear up for annual testing.

At Westbrook Middle School, we are incredibly fortunate to have Jeanne Moore and Kelsey McIsaac, whose dedication, expertise, and warm presence make a profound difference every day. From managing complex requests and communications to providing support for students, families, and staff, they handle countless responsibilities with remarkable efficiency and kindness. Their problem-solving abilities and unwavering commitment to our school community are invaluable. We deeply appreciate Jeanne and Kelsey!

Shoreline Arts Alliance Partners with Schools From Lyme-Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook to Host the First Annual Shoreline Arts Alliance Unified Arts Showcase

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at 5:30 p.m., Shoreline Arts Alliance will host the first annual Shoreline Arts Alliance Unified Arts Showcase at Flat Rock Gallery in Westbrook, Connecticut.  This formal gallery event is the celebration of a year-long partnership with area schools to create the first Shoreline Arts Alliance Unified Arts Showcase in the State of Connecticut.  Students from Lyme-Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook have been creating works of art through Unified Arts classes and afterschool clubs throughout the 2025-2026 school year.  Once a month, students and staff from all three school districts have met to work collaboratively on art projects, to strengthen community connections and friendships, and to develop their passion and skills as young artists.  Each school has created a town-shaped puzzle piece of art that will be displayed together at the showcase, highlighting the community and regional friendship of these three school districts. This will serve as a state-wide model that will grow into a larger map as the puzzle pieces of more towns are connected in the coming years.  In the years ahead, this event will continue to grow to include school districts throughout the State of Connecticut.

Lyme-Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook have a long history of working closely together in the well established CAS-CIAC Unified Sports Program- bringing students with and without special needs together across the State of Connecticut to compete in athletic events and to strengthen community commitment to belonging and inclusion for all students. This year, school staff from these three towns met with Shoreline Arts Alliance Director, Eric Dillner, to collaborate on the idea to expand these regional opportunities beyond just athletics and to create a showcase and formal gallery art show to support young aspiring artists.  Mr. Dillner shared his thoughts about the expanded partnership for a Unified Arts collaborative: “I’m excited to launch this initiative, highlighting Shoreline Arts Alliance’s mission to build inclusive, supportive arts communities—proving the arts can transform lives and are for everyone.” Since 1980, Shoreline Arts Alliance has been enriching the state of Connecticut and serving 24 shoreline towns as a Designated Regional State Arts Organization of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. These communities encourage, empower, and develop talented artists—transforming their lives in the process.

Dr. Kristina Martineau, Westbrook Superintendent of Schools, shared her excitement about the new program: “Our teachers in all three school districts have worked hard to create an amazing experience for our students to grow as artists together and as individuals. Our dedicated educators have spent countless hours of their time planning and leading regional events and school based activities throughout the year to teach our students how to grow as artists. And the kids have had so much fun together through it all. It has been an incredible experience and the art work our students have created this year is truly an inspiration.  I am most excited to see the town inspired puzzle pieces that will be unveiled at the gallery opening event in May.  I am grateful for the partnership with Shoreline Arts Alliance to support this vision of a regional unified arts model and for organizing and hosting what will be a memorable, impactful, and inspiring showcase of young artists from Lyme-Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook.”

Old Saybrook Public Schools Director of Student Services Sarah Smalley shared her thoughts about the strong regional partnership and the importance of continuing to strengthen opportunities for all students: “Collaborative opportunities for our students across our districts allow for the  expansion of social networks organically.  The ability to connect in art and community is a one of a kind experience and Old Saybrook is lucky to have neighboring districts work together to provide these occasions.  Adding this event to an already rich catalog of Unified opportunities helps further our collective missions of meaningful inclusion and experiences.”

  • Weekly Update for WMS - 4/10/2026

    Greetings, Westbrook Middle School Community,

We have had a busy week and are looking forward to a little R&R. Hopefully, you can step away and take a little time as well. Here is a look at the week behind and the weeks ahead.

    Knight Talks

We are tremendously proud of our student presenters at our annual Knight Talks competition today. The students celebrated America’s 250th anniversary by telling stories about impactful Americans, and they did a beautiful job. Congratulations to (in speaking order): Maddie M., Tyler F., Kaya P., Hudson B., Olivia G., Tatiana D., Scarlet L., James K., Isla O., and Oliver M.

A special “job well done” to Tyler F. - 1st place; Scarlet L. - 2nd place; Oliver M. - 3rd place. Honestly, all of the students’ stories were so impressive.

    Testing

State assessment season is approaching quickly! Students in grades 6-8 will participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA), while students in grade 8 will take an assessment designed to measure Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) knowledge and skills. These online assessments measure student knowledge and skills based on grade-level standards through various interactive question formats. Results help identify knowledge gaps, inform curriculum decisions, and provide valuable assessment data.

    Testing Schedule for WMS (2026)

May 11, 2026 - English Language Arts or Mathematics - Computer Adaptive Assessments (SBA)

May 12, 2026 - English Language Arts or Mathematics - Computer Adaptive Assessments (SBA)

    May 13, 2026 - Mathematics - Performance Task (SBA)

May 14, 2026 - Next Generation Science Assessment for grade 8 (NGSS)

    May 15, 2026 - Make-up Testing

All students are expected to participate in these assessments. While standardized measures have limitations, this information is crucial as we prepare for next fall. These assessments complement other evaluation methods to build a comprehensive picture of student progress. We encourage students to take these tests seriously and apply their best efforts. I will offer more information about this as we approach testing week.

For more information about Connecticut's assessment system, please visit the Connecticut State Department of Education website.Concert Season

Concert season is upon us. If you have a student involved in the music program, please communicate with Mrs. Floyd and/or Ms. Bartholet if there are questions about expectations, attire or anything else. Art Show

Join us for WMS's Art Show on May 6, coinciding with the band concerts. Doors open at 4:30 p.m., allowing visitors to enjoy student artwork displayed throughout the middle school hallways before the musical performances. Band students can briefly guide their parents through the exhibition before warm-up time. Refreshments will be provided. We especially encourage choir students and their families to attend both events. Make it a complete evening of artistic celebration. Come for the visual arts and stay for the musical performances!
