Westbrook’s Commitment to ALL Children in Our Schools

Westbrook Public Schools is committed to the success of every child by supporting the individual and unique needs of all children in a positive, inclusive, empathetic, and caring school community.  Westbrook Public Schools believes and values that all children are unique individuals with different needs, interests, talents, and passions and that our schools and school community are deeply committed to embracing and supporting those differences.

Westbrook Public Schools believes that to ensure the success of all students and the educational priorities identified in our Westbrook Portrait of a Graduate, we need to ensure equitable access and delivery of educational services. Equitable access in Westbrook Public Schools means providing resources, experiences, opportunities, and supports to meet the varied and individual needs of each student.

Westbrook Portrait of a Graduate

The school community and the community of Westbrook collaborated to share their perspectives and values about educational priorities for all students in Westbrook Public Schools.  The Board approved the Westbrook Portrait of a Graduate in 2022.  We are proud of the inclusive nature of our community discourse and confident that our shared vision of the Westbrook Portrait of Graduate represents well the educational values and beliefs of the Westbrook community for the youth of Westbrook.  The Westbrook Portrait of a Graduate includes six priority attributes that describe the Westbrook High School graduate: critical problem-solver, creative thinker, effective communicator, perseverant, socially aware, and responsible decision maker.

During the 2023-2024 school year, our school leaders, educators, and students have been hard at work learning what each Westbrook Portrait of a Graduate attribute means in their day to day experiences in our schools in the classroom and in a wide range of activities.  To learn more about the progress of our work at each school and district-wide, please visit one of the following links.

  • Weekly Update for WMS - 3/27/2026

Hello, Westbrook Middle School families! Let's catch up on the week and look ahead.

    Annual CAS and CABE Awards

The eighth grade team has selected eighth graders, Elly F. and Hudson B. for the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) Student Leadership Award, recognizing qualities such as decision-making ability, commitment, diplomacy, and concern for others. They, along with their families, will be invited to an upcoming Board of Education meeting to be publicly recognized. Additionally, Tatiana D. and Dominic C. have been named Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) Middle Level Scholar Leaders, an award recognizing academic scholarship and leadership both in school and the community. Like the CABE winners, the CAS award recipients were chosen by the eighth grade team and will attend a special recognition banquet in their honor. Congratulations to these students and their families; this is quite an accomplishment!

    Broadway Bound

On Thursday, April 2, 2026, eighth-grade students will travel to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in New York City to see the Broadway musical adaptation of The Outsiders. Students studied the classic S.E. Hinton novel this fall, watched the 1983 film, and completed the unit with a breakout box activity while dressed as Greasers or Socs. According to Broadway Direct, the musical “carefully honors the source material while adapting the story for the stage in a uniquely theatrical way.” We are excited to offer students the opportunity to see this Tony Award–winning show on Broadway.

    WMS Musical

Our talented middle school students brought Nemo to life on the Westbrook stage Thursday night. Opening night was a huge success, and from what I hear, the cast and crew are just warming up! It is not too late to catch a show. Here are the showtimes:

    • March 27: 6:00 PM
    • March 28: 2:00 PM

Don't miss this animating musical that showcases our students' remarkable talents!

High School Scheduling Process for 8th Graders

Eighth graders will enter their course requests for high school on April 9, 2026, during their regularly scheduled Social Studies class. Students who are not currently planning to attend WHS will still participate in the full scheduling process. If they ultimately enroll at Westbrook High School or return during freshman year, a schedule will already be in place.

Please ask your eighth grader about the Program of Study. They were instructed to take it home. For questions regarding course selection, please contact Rachel Kurek (Counselor, Grades 9–12), Amy Spagone (Counselor, Grades 6–8). Contact Leslie Carson, College and Career Readiness Coordinator, to schedule a time to pay WHS a visit, tour the facility and talk in more detail about what WHS has to offer. Regardless, they are all here to support families as they make the transition from WMS to WHS.

Middlesex Health Shoreline Clinic Career Day

Westbrook High School recently sent several juniors on a hands-on field trip to explore careers in the medical field. During this experience, students learned about the pathway from high school to medical school and beyond from an emergency room physician. They practiced suturing with a physician’s assistant, performed carotid ultrasounds, and tried intubation with paramedics. Students also explored blood sampling and laboratory analysis, learned how biomedical equipment technicians maintain hospital technology, and engaged in real-world scenarios with nursing staff. Additional sessions highlighted careers in occupational and physical therapy. At each station, students gained insight into required education, training, salaries, and job demand. Take a look at our students in action here.
